I have a 22 year old Ford Explorer (1996) and Flat Black Auto is the only repair shop in Bellingham who knows what they are doing when I need my car serviced. Scott and Andrew are the best!

Excellent service! They removed and replaced the engine in my Subaru at a competitive price. I will be going back to them in future. Honest and friendly people.

Andy and Scott took great care of me and my old VW Jetta...they fixed my driver side window so I don't need to duct tape plastic wrap over the crack to keep the rain out...they fixed it faster than expected and it works great now and were very communicative with me through the process! Very friendly family local business always good to support!

Scott is so polite and kind, easy to talk to. He explains everything very well to me. They let you bring your own parts if you want. My old van comes back working better than I ever thought possible when they do work on it. I think they are really good at what they do. They try hard to get me in when I call. And I don't feel like they are milking me for every dime possible. Thanks Flatblack!!

I originally called a yelp-top-rated shop in town to set up an appointment to get my old van worked on. When the guy on the phone found out the make and model he said "We don't work on things like that. The boss says it's not worth our time." When I asked if he could refer me to someone, he didn't hesitate, "Call Flat Black. To be honest with you, I think he's the best mechanic in town." After being turned down by one shop, I was eager to please the next mechanic, and made what I later thought could have been a big mistake. I showed my hand: if he thought the damage wasn't worth working on, I'd be willing to pay for a complete engine swap. The difference in attitude from one shop to the next was night and day. When the other shop seemed to say "we don't have time to work on old hunks-a-junk," Andrew's demeanor said "I'd love to help you keep that classic on the road!" So I limped my van down to the shop over the weekend, and dropped my keys in the slot. Andrew called me on Monday with great news. He had run some tests and done an inspection, and thought a new engine wasn't necessary. The one I had just needed some love! He was able to fix the problems I came in for, but through a test drive, also identified a few others that I had long known about, but had been suffering through, because I thought the solutions would be outside of my reach, financially. I asked how much it would cost to fix those things, he quoted me a reasonable price, and I said "do it." When he was done, I was ready to pay the full amount, but he said that he came in $200 under budget, so he lowered the price accordingly. I paid, he handed over the keys, and I hopped in my van. But wait.... THIS WASN'T MY VAN! Not the one I had gotten used to over the years at least. No, this was like my van back when I bought it! Bottom line: Andrew helped me when others wouldn't. He fixed problems that left other mechanics baffled. He knew he could have charged me triple, but he didn't. And on top of it all, he was friendly, accommodating, and honest the entire time. Epilogue: After I dropped my keys in the slot, I looked up Flat Black online, so that I could send them an email with a few extra observations about how the engine was acting. I immediately felt uncertainty and regret when I saw the previous reviews here on Yelp. But after how well I was treated, and how well my van was running when I got it back, I felt silly for ever having any doubts - we live in a world where people eat Tide Pods; and it appears that some of those same folks have been using yelp.
